Well, here's a fitness tip for us as we seek to be faithful witnesses: "But you, dear friends: build each other up on the foundation of your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, ...
Somehow, Christmas is a time when we become more keenly aware of ties and kinship. We reach out in a special way to family and friends. Perhaps, it's because we're more attune with the love of God.
What's the Hurry?

In the Christian calendar, this is the season of Advent , lasting one month leading up to Christmas. Advent comes before Christmas. As we await Christ's coming we have an opportunity to reflect on Christ coming as the Baby Jesus, who was really Immanuel, God with us; as our Savior who will come again and we wait . . . So what's the hurry? Why do we have to rush to celebrate Christmas? Are we so caught ...
It's Like Fire

It is a reminder that often things intended to make our lives better can end up controlling us to our detriment. Technology has many uses, particular with the recent and seemingly endless advances in this digital/information age. Not only is everything at our fingertips when we're stationary, but also when we're on the go. Very convenient. At ...
Called to be Sent Out

That was what Rev Pam Harris, MD reminded us of when she preached yesterday at Old Mission UMC : That we've been called to be sent out. This is something we need to be constantly reminded of. Our "yes" to Christ is a yes to a life of obedience and service - obedience and service to God and service to humanity where and how God sends us. This brought to mind Letty Russell's statement that: The way ...
The Witness of Hospitality

God places people in my life, especially when I travel, who remind me of how important the witness of hospitality is. On this occasion, two different people on two different occasions made time to have a meal with me, when, technically, they had no time. One was planned, one was impromptu. Time and presence are two important gifts to share with someone who is away from home. It is what we are called to do as ...
"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life'" John 8:12 . Jesus was light and so Jesus could go into the darkness and bring light; the one who said, "Let there be light" ( Genesis 1:3 ) and there was. So here's the question: Are we totally dwelling in the light of Christ so that we too ...
Agendas

Agendas matter. They're kind of guideposts. A meeting without an agenda is in danger of going all over the place. Have you ever attended one of those? Of course, there are different types of agendas. Some are situational, some are about our lives. Some are open and some are covert. The hidden ones can be a little challenging. In many ways, we can say that God has an agenda. As we think of the values and character ...
Contrasts in Life and Death

October 5, 2011 Steve Jobs died. With less fanfare: Fred Shuttlesworth died. This made me remember the summer of 1997. August 31, 1997: Diana, Princess of Wales died. September 5, 1997: With less fanfare and almost eclipsed, though widely mourned, Mother Teresa died. Talk about contrasts. There's a lesson here. And yet, " Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" ( Matthew 18:4 ). May God be glorified in our lives through our witness.
I did a lesson on it some time ago, that you can find here . What struck me this time around is how, like Jesus, Peter and John were in tune with their environment. The blind man called out to them, and they noticed, heard, stopped, and took the time to engage him and offer what they did have. They could have stopped at what they did not have, ...
Absent God

I was listening to some gospel music today and one was about heaven. I'd heard it before but really listened to it this time. To my surprise, it didn't mention God at all. Apparently God has nothing to do with heaven. Yet, when heaven comes up in Revelation, God is center stage, unmistakable and unavoidable; God and the Lamb. Where else are we avoiding God?
This includes what we put in and what we do with our ...
God's Mission

I was reminded again this week that even though we work with God ( 1 Corinthians 3:9 ), it is God's work, God's mission. We are privileged to share in it but always we have to be responsive to how, what, where, when, and to whom God would have us serve and share the good news. We have to make room for God's surprises and unexpected ways of working among unexpected people. This making room can be challenging ...
