STANING IN THE GAP
posted by Claire Smith at 8:22 PM || under General
There is much going on around us detestable. Many lives are being destroyed, people are being disenfranchised, and the powerful seem to be callous in the face of such immense suffering, intent on their own agendas. They are willing to spend millions to have their own way while people die of starvation, go hungry on their own doorsteps, die because they cannot afford medical care, and the list goes on. There is too much complacency and complicity in the face of what is nothing short of bribery and corruption as people pay exorbitant rates for favors and positions while others sell themselves to the highest bidder.
In times like these we recall the word of God through the prophet Ezekiel:
"And I sought for anyone among them who would repair the wall and stand in the breach before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it; but ...>> full

AN INVITATION TO DIE
posted by Claire Smith at 7:53 PM || under General
"For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
. . . For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength" (1 Corinthians 1:18, 22-25). So what place does the cross have in your life and your conversation? It's problematic for some people, but for us who name the name of Christ, who claim to be followers of Christ, it should be everything. Christ's death on the cross opened the way for our salvation. It is ...>> full

BREAK THE SILENCE
posted by Claire Smith at 7:35 PM || under General
Keeping silent about Jesus Christ is not an option, once we have experienced God's saving grace that comes through our Lord and Savior. It can only be good news that has to be shared. However, it is important that we allow God to continue working in our lives so that we are changed into Christ's likeness and our actions match our words. It is astounding that many people who shout "freedom" lay claim to Christ's name and profess that Jesus is their Lord and Savior. Yet, they use their freedom as an excuse to oppress others and deny other people what is life-giving. In this case the guilt is in their empty proclamation rather than their silence. Yes, we need to sing and talk about this Christ who came, lived, died and rose again. We need to tell others about what ... >> full

NEW HORIZONS, SAME WITNESS
posted by Claire Smith at 3:36 PM || under General
We are into January 2012. Can you imagine? Soon we will not be able to say, "Happy New Year!" Time is moving on. We give thanks to God for God's grace and mercy. It is good to know that as we move on, we do not move on from God's faithfulness. Jesus' "And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).
What an assurance!
We can move on to new horizons with confidence. As we move on, we continue our faithfulness in witnessing to God's love and reign. As God's faithfulness has not changed, God's call to participate in God's mission has not changed. Let us go forth and make disciples.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS
posted by Claire Smith at 10:15 PM || under General
A few years ago, a friend gave me a reggae Christmas CD. Yes, that's right; a CD . Every year I play this CD at Christmas and I'll share below part of an iNi Kamoze song that grabs me every time, and hopefully my hearing is okay and the lyrics are correct:
"All I really want for Christmas is to be a little more conscious ah don' really have fi look expensive and dear ........................................................................ But while you celelebrating let me ask you one thing why you want to X Jesus the Christ."
Just recently a friend of mine, Terry, did a Facebook post with a great explanation of the "X" in "Xmas," that it is the first letter of "Christ" in the Greek language. And that's true and all well and good.
However, the reality we face is that there are a lot of people who do want to "X" out the Christ in Christmas. Maybe it is ...>> full
